Karl Malden (1912-2009)

This bad news came in about two hours ago. Malden was the earliest surviving winner of the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, having won for A Streetcar Named Desire in 1951. He was of the versatile generation of character actors who could play heroes (On the Waterfront), villains (One-Eyed Jacks) and all the subtle shadings of ordinary life in between. Some may remember him more for television, even for commercials, but that'd be a shame. I'll add to this notice when time permits.

This is sad news, but I have to admit--I don't think I new he was still alive. Great actor though. BABY DOLL and ONE EYED JACKS would be among two of my favorites.
